Exercise: 5km Run – Melbourne Marathon (10’s)

Ah yes, the excitement of a large running event. It’s enough for me to consider competing in events again….okay, so maybe not!

It was pissing down with rain when I went to bed last night, and when the alarm went off at 6.30am it was still raining. Not a good start to the day!

I picked TW Michelle up on the way to the train station. This was to be her first race and the reason that I was actually running in MM!

Luckily the weather heading towards town was much better than heading towards the mountains, and the sun even came out as we jumped off the train at Richmond station 😀

The wind was cold 😯

The bag drop off area was big and there were no queues, and as we had a bit of time on our hands before the race started, we hung out at the MCG for a while, enjoying the sunshine!

Made our way to the start, stood around until 10am, then ran! As usual there were still the morons who thought it would be a good idea to get to the front of the crowd and then walk the whole way 🙄

We saw one lady hit the pavement really hard, landing on the side of her face. She hadn’t seen the curb!

Other than that it was pretty uneventful.

TW Michelle did a wonderful job, considering she hasn’t really done much running, she still has some problems with her breathing (lung capacity stuff!!) and she’s just generally new to the whole fun run thing.

We ended up with a 34.15 5km time!

The only gripe I really have is with the finish area. Honestly it was like hitting a brick wall of people as we crossed the line. There was nowhere to go. We had to weave through all the people on the grassed area and really just took a guess as to where the showbags were because there wasn’t very good signage. Then we had to wait forever in a huge queue to actually get our showbags.

But the trek back to the bag pickup area was the worst. There were only 2 sets of stairs and a path, all leading into a squashed little area at the top, where there were also people trying to get back down to the finish area and also spectators at the top. It took us over 20 minutes to get up those stairs 😡
